Kasmet pasižadu, kad Kalėdoms pradėsiu ruoštis anksti, bet iš tiesų beveik visada susizgrimbu apie gruodžio vidurį. Šįkart pradėjau ruoštis dar lapkritį, bet vis tiek per vėlai – daug darbų jau nebespėsiu. Teks atidėti kitoms Kalėdoms.
Bet šiemet bent jau padariau Advento kalendorių. Kai pamačiau šituos namukus, negalėjau atsispirti lankstymo ir klijavimo manijai… Advento kalendorius iškeliavo pas Loretą, nes juk ir suaugusieji nusipelno patirti Kalėdų laukimo džiaugsmą.
Every year I promise myself that I’ll start preparing for Christmas early enough, but every year I only start in mid December. Well, this year I started in November, but it’s still not early enough. I can’t believe it, but there are things I won’t manage to make till Christmas. Oh well, better luck next year.
Anyway, at least I made an Advent calendar this year. When I saw these little houses, I couldn’t resist obsessive folding and gluing. So here they are. The little houses are gone to Loreta, because even grown ups deserve the joy of waiting.
Kartais imu ir ką nors sugalvoju. O kartais tą idėją kam nors pasiūlau. Tai va. Tik visa bėda, kad nuo pasiūlymo ir idėjos iki realybės dažniausiai būna ne vienas žingsnis ir net ne vienas mėnuo. Galiausiai net ima graužti nedidukas kaltės jausmas. O kaip gi kitaip jaustis, kai pats pasiūlai ir paskui netesi pasiūlymo.

Sometimes I think of something and offer my ideas to somebody else. The only problem is that there is more than one step and more than a month for the idea to become reality. Sometimes I actually feel ashamed. How else could you feel when you propose something and then keep silent about it.
Pagaliau susiėmiau ir pagaminau ją. Tai – knygelė apie kelią, skrydį, svajones, draugus ir dar daug ką. Kol gaminau, knygelė keitėsi ir mainėsi, kol galiausiai tapo tokia, kokia yra. Kol paukštukai nutūpė ten, kur reikia, ir kol tvarkingai sugulė lapai.

Finally I made it. This is a book about a journey, a flight, dreams and friends, and much more. It changed its appearance a number of times before it became what it is now. Before the birds settled into places and the pages stayed together.
Kai gamini knygelę konkrečiam žmogui, kurį vos vos, tik truputį, pažįsti, stengiesi peržvelgti kiekvieną elementą to žmogaus akimis. Kartais pavyksta, kartais – ne.

When you’re making a book for a person you know a teeny tiny bit, you try to look at each element with his eyes. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don’t.

Kažkada anksčiau nusprendžiaupagaudyti Magiškos Kristinos įkvėpimą. Taigi pagaudžiau ir pamiršau. O štai vakar ėmiau ir sulaukiau kvietimo į paštą. Mmm… Baltas vokas slėpė štai tokią rudą dėželę su kringeliu.

Some time ago I tried to catch Magic’s inspiration, but then I completely forgot about it. Yesterday, however, I got an invitation to a post office. A white envelope hid this little brown box.

O šito puodelio įkvėpimą pagavo štai tokia vizija: “Kartais, kai darbe būna tylu, kai telefonui – pietų pertrauka ir jis nuvargęs ilsisi ant stalo parietęs po savim spiralinį laidą, kai arbatinis snūduriuoja liūliuojamas šilto vandens, o kompiuteris burzgia meiliai it katinas, kartais jauti, kaip žydram lėkštės kamputyje kaupiasi lietūs. Tada sėdi sustingęs ir bijai pajudinti kojos pirštą.”

Yra žmonių, žinančių, kad Mumiai yra didelė mano meilė. Dabar staiga suskaičiavau, kad namuose gyvena ne tiek jau ir mažai Mumių, o kur dar jų tendencija daugintis. Štai pavyzdžiui vakar pašto dėžutėje radau tokį nedidelį Šįbeitą – nuostabią Mumių porelę.

Some know that Moomins are my great love. Should I count, there is quite a number of Moomins in my home and the number is increasing. For example, yesterday I got a Little Something in my mailbox – a beautiful Moomin couple.

Lengvai dekoruotos degtukų dėžutės iškeliavo į paštą. Avis nugulė į dėžutę su avimi, žinoma, ir iškeliavo Vokietijon. O kitoje dėžutėje mano swapinės porininkės Rūtos Elzės laukė siurprizas – maža knygelė trumpoms ir staigioms mintims.

The slightly decorated matchboxes finally travelled to post office. Off to the world they went. The sheep, of course, chose to travel to Germany in a matchbox with sheep, and the other box with a small surprise – a little journal for jotting down sudden crazy thoughts – went to my swap partner Rūta Elze.
Jau seniai nerišau knygelės šiuo būdu. Jis man patinka, nes kiek primena vąšeliu nertą juostelę. Atvira nugarėlė tarsi apnuogina knygelės puslapius, todėl šį rišimo būdą renkuosi, kai knygelės lapai būna spalvoti – mano galva labai šauniai atrodo.

It’s been some time since I last did coptic binding. I love it because the result always reminds me of a crochet stitch. The open back of the book makes the paper of the journal visible, so I try to choose coptic binding whenever I use colourful paper for the pages.
Šįkart viršeliui pasirinkau šiurkštų lietuvišką liną. Pirminė idėja buvo visiškai kitokia – norėjau kai ką išsiuvinėti pilnuoju siuvinėjimu, bet pradėjusi siuvinėti supratau, kad kažkodėl nesižiūri. Tiksliau gal ir žiūrėjosi, bet knygelė turėjo būti dovanų konkrečiam žmogui, todėl na “nelipo” ir tiek. Todėl sugalvojau kitaip ir galiausiai dekoras gavosi iškilus paveiksliukas su susimąsčiusiu žmogiuku. O kad įsivaizduotumėt – knygelė yra židinio degtukų dėžutės dydžio.

This time I chose crude Lithuanian linen for covers (I should say I’m in love with Lithuanian linen). The decoration should have been very different from what you see in the end result. I wanted to embroider the cover, but once I did that, I understood it just wouldn’t be right for the person the journal was intended to. So the end result is a prominent picture of a thoughtful little stickman. Yes, this journal is a little one – it’s size is of a fireplace matchbox.
